Task 1 – Technical Glossary
Write a Glossary of the following key technical terms and subjects:

VECTOR IMAGES
Vector images are images that have been drawn with points and anchors also known as line art but also consists of fill and stroke factors, Fill is the color of whatever you've drawn and stroke is the the texture and the thickness of the outline of the drawing. Because vector images are made up of lines and points it's perfect for making banners because no matter how much your enlarge or zoom in on vector images they will stay looking detailed and won't blur out unlike raster images. Vector images are usually saved in WMF and SVG file format. 

When i was assigned a task where i had to do a photo shoot as an idea to put into a jewel case so that when i finished tracing over my chose picture from the photo shoot i would just have to put it in the jewel case template as the final product. When i was creating the vector version of my cover i used the pen tool in illustrator to trace over it using lines, curves, points and anchors. I was happy with the end product because i think it turned out better than i expected. The on the right is the finished product of my game cover with the vector image i created in the jewel case provided.

RASTER IMAGES
Raster image is the opposite of vector image because while you can enlarge and zoom in on a vector image and it will stay the same and clear, raster image when zoomed in or enlarge it won't stay clear because the pixels only get bigger the more you enlarge it or Zoom in. File formats used to save raster images are jpeg, gif, tiff, bmp etc. 








When i was assigned to a task most of the work i did was in Photoshop and most of the pictures i have edited were all made up of small picture elements called pixel which is basically short for 'picture element'. For the assignment i had to create a character that would look suitable for my game prototype and i edited it using pixels to make it look different because the template i used for it was an image i got from a site. The original image only had a sword but i didn't want a sword so i erased it and drew a bow and an arrow, when i finished doing those i carried on by completely editing the original image and turned it into something completely different.

THE PIXEL

The pixel is the smallest addressable element in a display device and is the physical point in a raster image like how points and lines are to a vector image.  The oldest type of pixel imagery was called the daguerreotype and it consisted of a lot things like polished silver surface, heated mercury, heated gold chlorine and etc. but those images were in black in white but when the first colored photographs came about they were taken in black and white but where put in different filters known today as the RGB or Red, Blue and green. if you mix together the colors in different portions you can create any color you like. Today pixels come in different shapes and sizes depending on the screen used like Plasma, OLED and LCD.  In my assignments when ever i edit an image or color something in Photoshop i use the RGB color palette instead of the CMYK.

COLOUR DEPTH
Color depth also known as bit depth is the amount of data in an image per pixel that can shown in a computer screen. The data is stored in bits. Each bit is two colors because it has the value of either a 1 or a 0. The more bits there are means that more color will be displayed. 1 bit is 2 colors meaning that 4 would be 16 so it just keeps multiplying by its self anything with 1 bit would be either black and/or white. 

1 bit = 2x1 = 2 colors
4 bit = 2x2x2x2 = 16 colors
8 bit = 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 = 256 colors
24 bit = 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 = 16,77, 216 or true color. 
The more colors the higher the resolution.

COLOUR MODELS
A color model is a type of system where you can create a range of colors by combining the primary colors, in software's like Photoshop or Illustrator you can access this by using and creating colors using the RGB and CMYK color pallet. The CMYK color pallet or model is more commonly used by printing companies while RGB is used for computer displays. RGB is also known as the additive color model while CMYK is the opposite being subtractive.  
    




RESOLUTION
Resolution can be referred to many things including image resolution and display resolution. The resolution of an image can be measured by pixels so the more pixels there are the higher the resolution is making it more detailed. Display resolution depends on the length and width of the monitor or TV screen and how much content can fit in it depending on the resolution.












ANTI-ALIASING
Anti-aliasing is when you make the jagged lines on an image smoother or just less visible, the jagged lines are caused by Aliasing. the process includes having to adjust the pixel positions or setting the the pixels intensity levels so that there is a more gradual transition between the image's color of line and the background color meaning so that it blends in and the jagged lines won't be as visible unless you zoom into it.




   


ASPECT RATIO
The aspect ratio is what describes the proportional relationship between the hight and the width of an image. It is known to be commonly expressed by having a colon in between two numbers like for example 18:7.

A file format is the standard way you can save and encode information to store as a computer file. There are lots of different types of file format like when saving a word document it will save as a '.doc' and PDF being an optional file format for adobe programs such as Photoshop. The file formats that are commonly used for images are jpg, png, tif and gif. 


COMPRESSION
The objective of image compression is to reduce or lessen the redundancy of the image data so that you are able to store or transmit an image more efficiently. Image compression can be either lossy or lossless. Lossless and lossy image compression are terms used to describe whether or not, in the process of compressing a file, all of the original data can be recovered when it's time to uncompress the file. with lossless data compression all of the data that was there in the first will remain the same when uncompressed. All of the data will be completely restored. This i usually the technique of choice for text like a word document or spreadsheet files where losing words or crucial data like financial data could pose as a big problem. The Graphics Interchange File or GIF is and image file format used on the internet which provides lossless file compression. Lossy file compression on the other hand is the complete opposite as it reduces a file by permanently eliminating some certain information, especially the redundant one's. When it's time to uncompress the file only a part of the original data or information is intact. Lossy file compression is more commonly used for video and sound files where a certain amount of information loss won't be detected by most of the people who use it. The image file JPEG which is generally used for photographs and other complex still images on the internet are images that include lossy compression.  





IMAGE CAPTURE DEVICES
An image capture device is a device which allows you to take digital images. For you take a digital image you will need to have a device that includes a vision sensor or a camera for example a camera, smart phone, laptop, computer etc. in present day basically every smartphone's has a camera installed into them which allows the user to take pictures anywhere at anytime. The hardware interface is what allows the user to do a frame grabber allowing you capture images and videos.  







OPTIMISING
Optimising is great because it allows you create balance between size of the file and the quality of the image. Optimising an image is important for website owners because images take longer to load up than the other contents of the page like the writing, optimising an image is very useful for website users because when you optimise an image and put on a website it will speed up the loading time because optimising makes the file size smaller, this process includes lossy compression. Optimising also has it's downside like loosing bit depth, resolution and the dimension of an image. 



STORAGE AND ASSET MANAGEMENT
Digital asset management (DAM) is a business process for organizing, storing and retrieving rich media and managing digital rights and permissions. Rich media assets include photos, music, videos, animations, podcasts and other multimedia content.
DAM involves the creation of an archive, the development of an infrastructure to preserve and manage digital assets and a search functionality that allows end users to identify, locate and retrieve an asset. At its simplest, a DAM is a set of database records. Each database record contains metadata explaining the name of the file, its format and information about its content and usage. Digital Asset Mamagement software can be used to create and manage the database and help the company to store rich media in a cost-effective manner.
